Title IX – Pregnancy & Childbirth
Rowan-Cabarrus Community College will “not discriminate against any student, or exclude any student from its education program or activity, including any class or extracurricular activity, on the basis of such student’s pregnancy, childbirth, false pregnancy, termination of pregnancy or recovery” as directed by the Department of Education’s regulations implementing Title IX of the Education Amendments Act (1972).
Students seeking accommodations related to pregnancy or childbirth must provide documentation indicating the requested accommodations are medically necessary. Documentation must be provided by an appropriately licensed medical professional and should include the following information:
- Recommended accommodations
- Both the beginning and ending dates for accommodations
- Name and signature of the medical professional who completed the evaluation along with their credentials and contact information.
To request accommodations, please complete the Pregnancy & Childbirth Accommodation Request Form. Documentation may be attached to the bottom of the form or may be provided to the Title IX Coordinator using the Accommodation for Pregnancy and Childbirth – Medical Documentation Form.
Rowan-Cabarrus Community will take reasonable action to return a student requiring an extended absence deemed medically necessary due to pregnancy or childbirth to the same academic standing held prior to the extended absence. Classes with lab, shop or clinical requirements may require a student to return with the next scheduled offering. Based on safety or regulatory requirements, students may be required to demonstrate current knowledge or competency prior to continuation in a clinical, lab or shop activity.
Regardless of any accommodation provided by the College, a student may be responsible for repayment of financial aid funds received and for meeting satisfactory academic progress requirements consistent with Department of Education regulations.
Students with a balance due to the College resulting from a documented medically necessary extended absence and who agree to a repayment plan for tuition and fees with the College will be able to register with a balance due as an accommodation under Title IX.
